What is a Winterscape?

A winterscape is a way of decorating your yard in the wintertime using snow, ice, natural objects and lights.

Why Build a Winterscape?

Beautify our Edmonton neighbourhoods! Get outside, exercise, and enjoy winter. Spend time with family, friends and neighbours. Connect with your community. Begin a new Family Day tradition!

Ideas and Suggestions

Winterscapes don’t require much equipment or many materials. Use what’s in your yard, add a few whimsical elements, and let your imagination run wild.

Find inspiration and ideas and suggestions to create your own winterscape using:

  • nature’s art supplies
  • getting creative with snow and ice
  • wildlife-friendly features
  • paint and colour
  • winter lights

Did you know that plants add visual interest, too? Our guest blog, Spring Gardening for Winter Beauty, by NAIT landscape architecture instructor Jennifer Jones has tips for a landscape that can be enjoyed all year. Some ideas include:

  • trees and shrubs
  • herbaceous plants
  • grasses
  • vines

Our What’s in a Winterscape? blog has even more photos and fun stories from previous entries.
